Jim Creek Twin Lakes

Located in the Jim Creek Recreation Area, Twin Lakes provides some of the best fishing and boating opportunities in the Puget Sound Basin. Both upper and lower lakes offer approximately 35 acres each of natural freshwater trout fishing.

Jim Creek Recreation Area →

Twin Lakes' Upper and Lower Lakes are open from May 1-September 30 for day use and are accessible by car or on foot. Popular activities at the lake include fishing, boating and wildlife viewing.

It is always a good idea to check in at the Recreation office for information on the lakes before heading out.

The lakes can be reached by private automobile on a single lane gravel road with pullouts. Drive time from the front gate is approximately 25 minutes. Speed limit is 15 mph and drivers are encouraged to use extreme caution. Twin Lakes can also be reached by hiking trails, which are approximately 4 miles from the Coho Campgrounds.

Amenities at the lake include shelter house with a wood burning stove, tables and chairs (electricity and potable water is not available). There are also additional picnic tables and a pit toilet for your convenience.

Rowboats, canoes and kayaks for your use on the lakes are available to rent. No personal boats are authorized. The Upper Lake is stocked several times a year and provides some of the best fishing in the area.

During the summer, the lakes are staffed on weekends. Small items and supplies can be purchased there, including bottled water, sodas, candy, some fishing supplies, worms, and fishing rods. You may also get your Washington State Fishing License here. In the event the lake is not staffed, these items can also be purchased at the on-site store, located at the Recreation Office, Bldg. #4 in the main camp area.

Please help us keep the lake in its natural state by not swimming or bringing floats to use in the water.

Fishing & Boating

Located in the Jim Creek Recreation Area, Twin Lakes provides some of the best fishing and boating opportunities in the Puget Sound Basin. Both upper and lower lakes offer approximately 35 acres each of natural freshwater trout fishing. The Lakes contain Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout. Although Rainbows are regularly stocked several times a year, the Cutthroat is a native.

To protect the health of our lakes and local ecosystem, personal boats, watercraft, and floating devices are not permitted. Swimming or wading in the lakes is also prohibited. Watercraft, gear and footwear that have been used in other lakes and waterways can unintentionally introduce invasive species, parasites or harmful organisms. These contaminants can spread and cause long-term damage to the lake environment. Thank you for helping us preserve the lakes and keep them safe for everyone to enjoy.

The creeks surrounding Twin Lakes and our recreation area are all spawning locations. In order to protect our fish populations, fishing is limited to the Twin Lakes.

Installation MWR Fishing Permits for Twin Lakes and Trident Lakes at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor are now combined. One regional permit – regardless of the issuing MWR facility and installation – is good for all locations.

Regional season permits are valid April 1-March 31, to coincide with the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife’s seasonal licenses.

Bird Watching

Birds are significant components of biological diversity within the North Cascades ecosystem. Over 200 species in 38 families can be found in park habitats that range from alpine meadows to low-elevation forests and wetlands. Three species (bald eagle, marbled murrelet, and spotted owl) are listed as “threatened” under the federal Endangered Species Act. The marbled murrelet, although spending most of its life in a marine environment, nests in large trees of old-growth forests, making it one of the rarest birds around. The rivers, lakes, and streams of the North Cascades attract breeding, migrating, and wintering birds. The Stillaguamish and Skagit Rivers attract one of the largest wintering concentrations of bald eagles in the continental United States. Clear, fast-flowing rivers and streams also host breeding populations for numerous Harlequin ducks.
